Approaching 40 years in the business of interior design
Originally founded in 1982, family-owned Tran + Thomas Design Studio has emerged as a top leader in Interior Architecture, Interior Design, and Product Selection. Our team brings extraordinary beauty and luxury to homes in the Kansas City area and beyond. There are no tired formulas or leftover recipes used in our work, but rather an approach that starts with heightened imagination and a practiced design philosophy and ends with a beautiful space for happy clients. For over a quarter century we have turned dreams into reality by first imagining the ultimate interior and then determining how to achieve it.
Building new homes, remodeling, finding the perfect furniture for clients
Whether working with architects, builders and sub-contractors in building new custom homes, remodeling tired spaces, or updating/refreshing one room to an entire house; Tran + Thomas’ breathtaking interior design is famous for making any clients’ style beautiful and reflected in their interior. Traditional, transitional, and modern are all basic design styles which Jill and Carmen have implemented many times over.

Just as a professional hair dresser knows exactly what products your hair needs, the best color for your face, and cut for your personality and lifestyle; an interior designer can help determine what style best represents and reflects your personality.
Jill Tran comes from a long line of successful designers and craftsmen and has been a buyer at the International High Point Furniture and Accessory Market for more than 30 years. Her eye for scale and color have given her wings to create wonderful interiors and beautiful interior products. Her paintings have been commissioned for conference centers and her lamp designs have been sought after by retailers such as Horchow, Roche Bobois and Neiman Marcus (including one piece that was featured on the sitcom Will & Grace). Tran’s interiors have won numerous awards and her articles on design have been published in a multitude of local and national interior design magazines. Tran’s design talents are featured in homes in Seattle, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Annapolis, Beaver Creek, Dallas, and her hometown of Kansas City.

For three years prior to joining Jill Tran; Carmen Thomas channeled her formidable energy into Florida’s spectacular Amway Center Arena (home of the Orlando Magic), working with architects and consultants to create the interiors for more than 60 suites, 13 hospitality spaces, and a myriad of restaurants, bars and retail venues. She was an obvious choice for leading the design team after contributing her exceptional design talents and concepts on retail, exhibit, hospitality and commercial projects while at the Kansas City area firms of Populous, Gould Evans, Dimensional Innovations, and Winntech. Thomas pursued both interior design and business degrees at Kansas State University, following fine arts studies at the University of Arizona. Her diverse skills, experience and portfolio are supported by a LEED accreditation and numerous design awards and publications.
Our philosophy can’t be summed up in some succinct, poetic phrase, but it might be thought of like this: We think outside the shipping container the box came in, or when life give us lemons – we make lemon chiffon pie served on antique silver. The truth is our work is not for everyone – if a potential customer is looking for vanilla ice cream, he or she should know up front that ours will be made from roasted vanilla beans, fresh cream and served with shaved dark chocolate in a crystal dish.
