Jill’s Great Aunt Goldie’s Butterhorn rolls

When I was a little girl and would run in to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house on Thanksgiving afternoon…this was one of the heavenly smells that greeted me!  I loved Thanksgiving so very much because of my family all around me, being in their incredible warm and inviting home with all of the scents that hugged me and of course, the amazing food!

One of my favorites on the table every year were my Aunt Goldie’s Butterhorn rolls.  They are beyond amazing!  I would eat them the same way each time…until them, eat the outside and the ends and then savor the soft center.  I invite you and your family to eat them “Jill proper” and any way that makes you happy, too!

From everyone at Tran + Thomas Design Studio…we wish you and your family the most joyous of Thanksgivings!

1 cup shortening (I am the wild child and sometimes use butter instead, but they don’t seem to rise as high)

1 cup milk

1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

1 teaspoon white sugar

1/2 cup warm water (110 degrees)

2 eggs

1/2 cup white sugar

2 teaspoons salt

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup butter, softened

  1.  In a small saucepan, combine shortening/butter and milk. Heat until melted.  Set aside to cool.  Dissolve the yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in the warm water.  In a large bowl, beat the eggs, 1/2 cup sugar and salt together.  Add milk mixture and yeast mixture to the egg mixture, stirring until blended.  Sift in flour and baking powder.  Mix well.  Cover.  Refrigerate overnight (or until chilled to center).

  1. Divide dough into fourths.  On floured surface, roll out into 1/2 inch thick circles.  Spread surface with soft butter.  Cut each circle like a pie into 8 triangles.  Roll from larger to smaller end.  Place point side down on a greased baking sheet and brush with more melted butter.  Loosely cover with greased plastic wrap or foil.  Allow to rise until doubled, 3-4 hours.

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees.  Bake rolls for 8-10 minutes in preheated oven or until a delicious golden brown.  Don’t over bake!

Makes 32 yummy butterhorns.
